Container transport by inland navigation vessels reached 4 million tons, representing a 1.8% increase compared to the previous quarter but a 3.3% decrease compared to the second quarter of 2023. These figures include all navigation activities on Belgian waterways, including those originating from outside Belgium, according to Statbel.
Handled Cargo Volumes
In the second quarter of 2024, the total volume of goods handled in Belgian seaports reached nearly 39 million tons. This represents an increase of 4.2% compared to the previous quarter and 1.2% compared to the same period in 2023. The quantities of freight loaded saw a 0.9% increase compared to the first quarter of 2024 and a growth of 4.5% year-on-year, reaching just over 33 million tons.
Performance of Seaports
In total, 5,556 maritime vessels arrived at Belgian seaports during the second quarter of 2024. This represents an increase of 3.9% compared to the previous quarter but a decrease of 4.6% compared to the same period in 2023.
Departures reached 5,539 vessels, marking an increase of 2.9% compared to the first quarter of 2024 but a decrease of 5.2% compared to the same period in 2023.
